The Real Story by Federico — Relocating to Miami
Federico Lehder’s own account, from our March 2023 Bogotá conversation, of the family’s 1965 relocation from Armenia, Quindío, to Long Island, and why what happened next was inevitable, from the inside.

In February 1965 Elena Rivas de Lehder took Carlos to Long Island. Later that year she brought Federico. The family relocation is a footnote in every Carlos Lehder biography.
Federico told me, in Bogotá in March 2023, that everything anyone thinks they know about that relocation is wrong. Not the date. The reason.
This is Federico’s own account of what actually drove Elena’s decision to leave Colombia; why the destination was Westbury, Long Island, and not Miami or New York City; how the family financed the move; and what happened between Wilhelm Lehder and Elena in the last months before she left, that ended the 1961 separation on the terms it ended on.
Federico told me this story because he wanted the record to have it. He died six months later.
