This is my account of the actual Carlos-Pablo relationship, drawn from three years of Lehder-family sources and cross-checked against the Bowden and Gugliotta primary material. What emerges is not a business partnership that soured. It is a family relationship — including two shared holidays with the children, one shared woman across a period the two of them never subsequently discussed, and two specific moments (1982 and 1986) at which one man nearly killed the other.
The piece closes with Federico’s own account of what happened in January 1987, three weeks before Carlos’s arrest. Federico believed, from that January until his death in September 2023, that Pablo Escobar personally gave the Colombian government the intelligence that produced Carlos’s extradition.
