The Family’s Lifestyle in Quindío

The physical record of the Lehder family’s Quindío years — 1982 to 1984 — has almost entirely been destroyed. What was not seized in 1987 was sold, redistributed, or intentionally erased by the family in the late eighties.

This piece is a reconstruction of the day-to-day texture of that period, drawn from thirteen surviving eyewitnesses I interviewed between 2023 and 2025 — household staff, Armenia-based Movimiento party workers, coffee-farm employees, the specific priest who blessed La Posada Alemana, and two of Carlos’s childhood friends who visited the estate during the period.

The piece is deliberately not political. It is a piece about a Colombian coffee-country household of a specific era — the coffee, the horses, the visitors, the small zoo, the John Lennon statue, the Sunday lunches, the German architecture Carlos insisted on, the classical music his mother preferred, and the specific afternoon in November 1983 that Federico told me was the last one that felt like a normal family Sunday.
