An account of the residence Elena Rivas de Lehder actually lived in during her last two decades, where nobody visited, and what she did with her days while her son was in Butner.

Elena Rivas de Lehder died in 2010, at 83, while Carlos was at FCI Butner. The public record has almost nothing on where or how she lived her last twenty years.
This piece is my account, drawn from the six people who saw her regularly in that period, of the residence she actually kept — a modest home not in Bogotá but in a specific municipality of Antioquia that the family has never named publicly. Also: what she did with her days, whom she saw, what she read, what she wrote, what she refused to talk about, and — in the last year of her life — the conversations she had with Federico about what she wanted Carlos to know and what she did not want him to be told.
The piece includes the seven-line note she wrote to Carlos in July 2009, six months before her death, that Federico kept in his study drawer and which Daniel Z. read in 2023.
