The Lehder Home in Germany

The specific residence — address protected — where Carlos Lehder actually lived in Germany, 2020 to early 2022, and what the eighteen months there looked like from inside the house.

Reporter: Daniel Z. · Heidelberg Correspondent · Recorded November 2021

Cover placeholder: The Lehder Home in Germany.

Public teaser

The German residence Carlos Lehder lived in from June 2020 to early 2022 is, per my agreement with the current occupants, not identified by address in this piece. The rest of what I have — I wrote down.

The house itself — a Catholic-run transitional facility outside Bonn that then became a private residence outside Heidelberg — the daily rhythm inside it, the specific room he chose, the books on the shelf when he arrived and the books he added, the meals, the visitors (there were more than the American press assumes), the calls to Colombia, the small garden, the walks, and — running throughout — my friend the driver’s day-by-day account of what Carlos said in the car.

The piece is my most personal on the subject. It is also the piece the current German occupants have specifically authorised, on the condition that the address remain protected until further notice.

The rest is behind a reader or publisher license, below.
